The principal feature of all dredgers in this category is that the loosened material丨mud丨 sand丨caly is raised from its in-situ state in suspension through a pipeline system connected to a centrifugal slurry pump. 
Various methods can be used to achieve the initial loosening of the material. If the material is naturally very loose, suction alone will suffice, but stronger materials may require mechanical loosening or the use of a water jet. Hydraulic dredging is most effective when dealing with fine sand, as they are easily held in suspension.
