Introduction Of Grab Boat

Apr 27, 2026

A grab dredger, commonly referred to as a grab boat, is a professional engineering ship specially designed to excavate and remove underwater silt and deposits. It mainly operates in waters such as sea floors, river channels and port basins. The most iconic equipment of this type of vessel is the clamshell grab bucket, which undertakes all core excavation work. Thanks to its simple mechanical structure and flexible and diversified operation modes, grab dredgers play an indispensable role in port daily maintenance, water ecological remediation and various capital dredging projects. Most waterway dredging works require precise operation and flexible mobility, which this vessel can fully meet.

Core Equipment of Grab Dredgers

The clamshell grab bucket serves as the core working component and primary excavation device of the whole ship. It consists of two hinged jaw plates that close tightly to capture and collect underwater sediment and waste. The lifting system controls the vertical movement of the grab, enabling it to sink to the water bottom smoothly and lift loaded materials after grabbing. The system is generally composed of winches, steel cables and pulley blocks, with stable bearing capacity to adapt to heavy-duty operation demands. The driving forms are mainly divided into hydraulic drive and electric drive. Hydraulic systems are widely applied for their stable control performance and powerful driving torque. Electric-powered equipment is more suitable for eco-sensitive waters, featuring low noise and low exhaust emissions to reduce environmental impact.

Operation Logic of Grab Dredging

The whole dredging process begins with the controlled lowering of the grab into the water until it lands steadily on the sediment layer. Afterwards, the jaw plates close with sufficient clamping force to trap bottom silt, rock debris and other sundries. Once fully loaded, the grab is hoisted upward by the winch device and transported to the designated barge or storage hopper for unloading. This cyclic working mode ensures high-precision excavation. It also delivers reliable performance in narrow spaces and complex uneven terrains, including dock corners and quay wall peripheries. As each grabbing cycle is independently controlled, operators can flexibly adjust the working depth and operating position in real time. This not only improves the precision of sediment removal, but also effectively protects surrounding coastal structures from construction disturbance.

Structural and Functional Classification of Grab Dredgers

Grab boats adopt differentiated structural designs according to application scenarios, dredging capacity requirements and mobility needs. Reasonable classification helps engineering teams select targeted models to match different marine construction projects.

Classification by Hull Propulsion

Self-propelled grab dredgers are equipped with independent propulsion systems, allowing autonomous navigation and rapid relocation between construction sites. They are highly applicable to projects requiring frequent long-distance transfers. In contrast, non-self-propelled grab dredgers have no built-in driving devices and rely on tugboats for towing and positioning. Nevertheless, their streamlined hull design and low center of gravity bring superior working stability. They show obvious advantages when operating with large-scale grabs in deep water or rapid current sections.

Classification by Working Mechanism

Mechanically, single-grab dredgers are equipped with a single large clamshell bucket and operate in intermittent cycles. They are ideal for small-scale routine maintenance dredging, such as silt cleaning around docks and yacht harbors. Multi-grab dredging systems are fitted with multiple grab devices, which can work in tandem or synchronously. This continuous operation mode guarantees stable construction efficiency and higher output, making them the preferred option for large-scale port expansion and waterway deepening projects that focus on continuous and high-efficiency construction.
